About Pamela Z

Pamela Z grew up in Boulder, Colorado, and majored in voice studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She gigged around Boulder during college as a singer/songwriter before moving to San Francisco in 1984. She became interested in punk and new-wave music in the early 1980s and followed the work of composers like John Cage and Brian Eno. She felt that at the time she did not have the electronic tools to do that kind of work herself, so she began to experiment with different recording technologies and effects pedals, eventually establishing herself as a pioneer and leader in the contemporary music genre.

Since she specializes in live performance, Pamela Z has toured extensively both domestically and abroad. She has had her large-scale, performance works installed in venues including the Kitchen in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, among many others. She has also received commissions from groups including Kronos Quartet, Bang On A Can All Stars, and the San Francisco Symphony. She has won numerous prizes and awards, including the 2019-2020 Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome, and the ASCAP Music Award several times. She has been award numerous grants and fellowships to continue her work nearly every year since 1991.
