About Laura Love

Laura Love was born Laura Jones in Nebraska in 1960. Her father was a jazz saxophonist, but she was raised by her mother, a former jazz singer named Winifred Jones. However, her mother had several mental health struggles and Laura spent much of her childhood in the foster care system. She left home at age 16, determined to be a singer. She moved to Portland, Oregon, and then to Seattle, where she enrolled at the University of Washington. She graduated with a degree in psychology in 1989, but ultimately made her living by gigging in the Seattle punk/grunge scene as a bassist.

After some rejections and negative reviews, Love struck out on her own and created her own label called Octaroon Biography. She released her first album in this way in 1989. Her sales grew over the course of three more albums, and in 1994, she was invited to perform a song at a show at Carnegie Hall designed to showcase undiscovered musicians. Her performance was so well-received that she ended up on Billboard's 1995 list of the ten best unsigned artists. Her major-label debut album, Octaroon, was released in 1997 and she quickly became a big hit in folk music with her signature blend of urban rhythms and acoustic sounds. She released a memoir and companion album called You Ain't Got No Easter Clothes in 2003. In total, she has released eleven albums and continues to tour internationally.
