About Unsuk Chin

Unsuk Chin was born in South Korea. Starting at age 3, she taught herself piano and music theory before studying composition at Seoul National University. One of her compositions won the 1984 ISCM World Music Days Competition in Canada and was chosen for the 1986 UNESCO Rostrum of Composers.  In 1985, she won first prize from the Gaudeamus Foundation in Amsterdam. She then moved to Hamburg to study composition at the university there before moving to Berlin where she worked as a freelance composer at the Electronic Music Studio at the Technical University. 

Beginning in 2001, she became Composer-In-Residence for several orchestras all over the world, including the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester in Berlin, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Philharmonie in Essen. She has won several awards for her compositions, including the Grawemeyer Award (2004), the Arnold Schoenberg Prize (2005), the Prince Pierre Foundation Music Award (2010), the Wihuri Sibelius Prize (2017), and the Kravis Prize (2018). Her works are performed worldwide by major orchestras including the BBC Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and others.
